 November 4 thru 7, 1961

This demonstration resulted from a request from Robert McNamara, Sec. of Defense. The rocket belt team flew from Niagara Falls, NY to Phoenix in a old C-46 "Curtis Commando" [I.e., a long ride at 150 kts]. We made two rocket belt flights [free flight #58 & #59] - a truck jump - translation, and an 'L' shaped flight involving a 90 degree turn at a flag. The team stayed at the Desert Rose Motor Hotel in Phoenix. The crowd wasn't as large as most - but it had some pretty high class personnel.

Ernie keeps an eye on things after the flight. The flag was the obstacle we made the 90 turn around.

That's Hal 'obscured' at left center.

Ernie at work in his portable shop. That's not a mess on the left - just a damaged photo. You can see the belt, if you look closely.
