This flight [#76] was part of a 20 year anniversary celebration of Army Aviation, sponsored by the Army Aviation Association of America and the St. Louis Junior Chamber of Commerce in co-operation with the Army Transportation Material Command. It was held June 3, 1961 at the St. Charles County Airport [Smartt Field (SET)] some 20 miles north of St. Louis, MO. Also flying that day were a replica of Lindberg's Spirit of St. Louis and a WWI British fighter plane.
A simulated nuclear blast will utilize only conventional explosives, including 215 pounds of TNT, white phosphorus grenades, 350 gallons of gasoline and 115 pounds of napalm.
Landing from a helicopter and a short-landing aircraft, 85 Army reservists will stage an assault landing.
The troops are from the Third Battle Group, Sixth Infantry and from the 102nd Transportation Corps Detachment (Aircraft Maintenance), and all are from the St. Louis area.
