Notice anything peculiar here? Hal is going backwards !  Note the angle of the rocket 'tubes' (in "white" above) that result in a component of thrust to the right, and he is facing left. In fact he did 3 pirouettes over the 100 yard translation. One of the military 'brass' asked me afterwards if this was done on purpose, and I responded no. Of the 3 degrees of freedom, yaw direction was the toughest to control intuitively; i.e., rotate the left motorcycle grip counterclockwise to rotate left, clockwise to rotate right. Wendell Moore told me later that that was the right answer as indicating there was more development work to be done. [We were looking for $200,000 for a phase 2 development contract.]

Ganczak and "Bear" assist the pre-flight.

A little fooling around with 'Minutemen'.

Post Flight Debriefing

Bell Pres. Giesel (on right) thinking a couple more highballs and the $200,000 phase 2 money is "In the bag" ?

"Thanks Mr. Giesel. Now about that raise ..."
